At Clear Mind Integrative Health, we often say: symptoms are messages, not mistakes. When we take the time to listen to the body—through both conversation and data—we begin to see patterns long before disease becomes a diagnosis. One of the most important, and often the most overlooked marker, is fasting insulin.
Most conventional care focuses on blood glucose. Patients are told their glucose is “normal,” and therefore everything must be fine. But what we know—both clinically and through the lens of the metabolic approach to health—is that insulin tells a much earlier, and much more meaningful, story.
Fasting insulin is not just a number. It is a window into how hard your body is working behind the scenes to maintain balance.
What Is Fasting Insulin, Really?
Fasting insulin measures how much insulin your body is producing after a period of not eating, typically 8–12 hours. Insulin is the hormone responsible for moving glucose out of the bloodstream and into the cells. But when the body becomes resistant to insulin’s signal, it compensates by producing more.
This means you can have completely “normal” blood sugar levels while your insulin is quietly climbing higher and higher.
This is where dis-ease begins.
The Silent Climb Before Diagnosis
Years—sometimes decades—before a diagnosis like diabetes, cancer, or neurodegenerative disease, the body is already struggling with metabolic dysfunction. Elevated fasting insulin is often one of the earliest signs.
This matters because insulin is not just a blood sugar hormone. It is a growth signal.
Chronically elevated insulin can:
• Promote inflammation
• Drive fat storage and metabolic inflexibility
• Stimulate cellular proliferation
• Disrupt hormonal balance
• Feed pathways that support tumor growth
This is why we don’t wait for disease to declare itself. We look for these early shifts.
Why “Normal” Isn’t Optimal
Many lab ranges consider fasting insulin up to 20 µIU/mL as “normal.” At Clear Mind, we do not consider that optimal.
An optimal fasting insulin is typically between 2–4 µIU/mL.
Anything above that suggests the body is compensating. It is working harder than it should to maintain stability. And when the body is working that hard, it is not at ease—it is in dis-ease.
This is where prevention lives.
The Role of Fasting Insulin in Chronic Illness
Elevated insulin and insulin resistance create an environment where cells are constantly being signaled to grow.
This is not inherently bad—growth is part of life—but when it becomes unregulated, it creates vulnerability.
By measuring fasting insulin, we gain insight into:
• Whether the body is in a growth-promoting or healing state
• How effectively cells are responding to metabolic signals
• Where to intervene with nutrition, fasting, and lifestyle
This is why fasting insulin is not optional in our care model—it is foundational.
What We Do With This Information
Testing is not about collecting numbers. It is about guiding strategy.
When fasting insulin is elevated, we begin to support the body in restoring sensitivity through:
• Therapeutic low-carbohydrate nutrition
• Strategic fasting (when appropriate)
• Increasing healthy fats to stabilize energy
• Supporting mitochondrial function
• Reducing inflammatory inputs
• Addressing stress physiology
This is not about restriction. It is about creating an environment where the body no longer has to overcompensate. Because when insulin lowers, inflammation often follows. Energy improves. Cravings stabilize. The body begins to trust again.
Why This Matters for Prevention
Most people do not feel insulin resistance in its early stages. There is no immediate pain signal, no urgent symptom–not even one–that demands our attention. But the body is whispering. Fasting insulin allows us to hear that whisper before it becomes a crisis. At Clear Mind Integrative Health, this is the space we care about most—the space before diagnosis, before decline, before the body has to shout. We believe prevention is not passive. It is active, informed, and deeply personal.
A Final Thought
If you have ever been told your labs are “normal” but you still don’t feel like yourself, this is where we begin.
We look deeper.
We ask better questions.
We listen to the body’s patterns, not just its extremes.
Fasting insulin is one of the clearest signals we have to understand your metabolic terrain. And when we understand the terrain, we can begin to change it. Because true healing is not about chasing symptoms. It is about restoring balance at the root.
At Clear Mind Integrative Health, this is the work we are honored to do alongside you.
I am humbled to walk with you to your optimal health!
